Tourist Visa to Russia

You should decide whether you will be an independent traveller or you will have everything organized by a travel agency.

Independent Travellers

  1. You should get in touch with the nearest consulate in order to learn what you need for a Russian visa, do not forget to ask whether you need to submit originals of the Tourist Voucher & Confirmation or these documents sent to your email will do. Also you should ask if you have to make an appointment to submit your application.
  2. You should buy tickets into and out of Russia
  3. You should book a hotel, you can use popular booking sites for this or contact your hotel directly
  4. You should get in touch with a hotel and ask if they provide visa-support (this service is not provided for free), i.e. you can get a Tourist Voucher and a Tourist Confirmation with their help. If your hotel doesn’t provide this service, you can use independent providers of this service (I believe they can be trusted as most respectable hotels have them as their partners), you should indicate all the places you are going to visit

5. Proceed to the site https://visa.kdmid.ru, you will be asked to type the following:

  • “Reference number: printed on the bottom line of approval of a foreign tourist “Референс №». It is necessary to introduce whole number with leading zeros. “ This you will find in the document named ПОДТВЕРЖДЕНИЕ
  • “Confirmation number: printed on the top line of confirmation of a foreign tourist. The number can contain only numbers or numbers with letters. You should only enter the numbers.” This you will find in the document named VOUCHER or ВАУЧЕР

6. Prepare the rest of the documents.

7. Submit your application at a consulate or a specially designated visa-centre.

8. Receive your passport with a visa and check it.  Here is the instruction from  http://www.montreal.mid.ru/ or in PDF how_to_read_russian_visa

9. Before you cross the border you will be given a Migration Form that you should fill in. If you arrive in one of the major cities you don’t need to do it, as your passport will be scanned and a Migration Form with all the necessary information will be given to you.  front_page  back_page Part A will be taken by the Immigration Officer while Part B (Б) you should keep till you leave Russia. If you lose it you should get a duplicate not later than 3 days after the loss in a Federal Migration Service office (ФМС). Be prepared to present additional documents besides your visa and passport at the border when you enter Russia.

10. When you get to your hotel you should present you passport with your visa and your Migration card to the staff who will copy them. These documents will be used to register you at the hotel. This should be done on the second day of your stay at latest. This is done by the hotel, not you, and can cost something. You will be given a confirmation that you have been registered in Russia. This document is called “UVEDOMLENIE” (Уведомление) and should be presented to the Immigration Officer when you leave Russia. Besides you should have it with you all the time while in Russia or you can be fined.

  2. You should choose a travel agency you will book your trip with. The conditions of their work differ. So you should liaise with your agent directly and decide if you are interested in their product. Beware of swindlers, ladies and gentlemen. You should ask if your travel agent can provide you with both a Travel Voucher and a Travel Confirmation. After receiving these documents you can go on with the rest of the documents, including filling in a Visa Application Form on https://visa.kdmid.ru . You will be asked to type the following:

    1. Hi, Henri! There are several types of Russian visas. If you stay with your friends you should apply for a private visa (prive), not a tourist visa, which is for those who stay at hotels. Call Russian embassy for more details. You should start to prepare documents well in advance, say 2 months before coming to Russia. Please, read ‘General Information’ and ‘Private Visa’ sections of this site.
