Ekaterinburg/Yekaterinburg was founded in 1723 when first of its factories, metallurgical, was built. Now it’s one of the largest Russian cities with 1,5 mln citizens and one of the industrial capitals of Russia. As the city is young you will not find the charm of the old Russian towns here. It’s a modern city where the scarce relics of the older days are destroyed to make way for ugly shopping centres. What I liked about Ekaterinburg is its people and some museums. Here is a map that can be helpful https://goo.gl/tekwBu.

Ekaterinburg witnessed one of the most horrible events in the Russian history: the murder of Nicolas II and his family. The act was performed in Ipatyev’s house – now there is the Church on Blood (Храм-на-Крови)(Tolmacheva Ul. 34. Opening hrs: 8-20) on the spot.
The imperial family were canonized in the Russian Orthodox Church and if you wish you can visit a monastery devoted to them – Ganina Yama (Ганина Яма) (6-21, +73432830374), here the emperor’s family remains were destroyed. The monastery is located in a picturesque wood and consists of 7 churches. There are two ways to get Ganina Yama: 1. Bus from Severny bus station – 15.30 on Saturday (return at 20.00), 07.00 on Sunday (return at 11.30); 2. Bus 223 from metro station Mashinostroiteley at 8.53, 11.28, 13.40, 15.50 (return at 7.45, 10.23, 12.33, 14.48, 16.55, 20.37).
